Angelina Jolie adopts Vietnamese boy

HOLLYWOOD actress Angelina Jolie has left a Vietnamese orphanage with her
new son, whom she has renamed Pax Thien Jolie. Officials said the adoption of the boy from the Ho Chi Minh City orphanage would be final once US consular and embassy officials gave approval.

The boy had been registered at Tam Binh orphanage under the name Pham Quang Sang.

Angelina Jolie and her child were driven from the orphanage to the Justice Department in the city centre to sign adoption documents. Her car was seen leaving the underground parking area 30 minutes later.

"It is lucky for him. It's wonderful to be adopted by someone really famous. You can have a good life," said Nguyen Thi Thuong, 39, who was at the office with her British husband to register their child's birth certificate. The boy adopted by Angelina Jolie is aged between 3 and 4.

Angelina Jolie has three other children - an adoptive son and daughter and a biological daughter with Hollywood actor and partner Brad Pitt. Angelina Jolie flew into Ho Chi Minh City late yesterday from Japan on a chartered plane, accompanied by her son and daughters.

The boy, described by adoption authorities as healthy, had been abandoned at a local hospital in 2003 and cared for since at the orphanage. Senior officials said Jolie's adoption had been speded up, partly due to her celebrity status.

The actress, 31, filed adoption papers in early March through an unidentified American agency without Pitt. Under Vietnamese law, a single person may adopt a child but an unmarried couple
may not. In Vietnam, adoptions can take as little as one month if background checks are quickly completed along with confirmation the adopting family can support a child.

Angelina Jolie and Pitt Brad visited Ho Chi Minh City last November and met children at the orphanage. The couple say they have no plans to marry but are committed to raising their
children together.

Their biological daughter, Shiloh Nouvel, was born last year.

Angelina Jolie adopted Maddox from Cambodia and Zahara from Ethiopia before her relationship with Pitt Brad, who has now become their adoptive father.

The couple starred in the 2005 movie Mr & Mrs Smith.

They are also working together on the film A Mighty Heart about the killing of a US journalist by Pakistani militants.

A report from In Touch Weekly claims that at a recent test screening one witness that apparently counted as people headed for the exits claimed that 28 people walked out of the theater during the showing. "The movie is long and boring and has little action," a screener dished to the weekly entertainment magazine.

Us Weekly Magazine says basically the same thing reporting that The Assassination of Jesse James has reportedly been a dud with critics and test audiences.

Vietnamese adoption official Vu Duc Long revealed last week Angelina has filed papers to become an adoptive single parent to a boy between the ages of three and four from the Tam Binh orphanage on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City.

Long revealed the adoption process should not take more than three months. Angelina Jolie filed for the adoption in the US and her application was approved by Long's department office last week.

It will now be sent to officials in Ho Chi Minh City, who will also review it.

US meanwhile reports the latest addition to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's family may be moving into the couple's $3.5 million New Orleans mansion sooner than you think.

The A list actress won't be given any preferential treatment.

"[angelina jolie] will have to follow procedure like any other American," Vu Duc Long, head of the Ministry of Justice for Vietnam, tells Us.

Still, it's not out of the ordinary to speed up the adoption process when celebs are involved, à la Madonna's scandal with baby David Banda in October.

And there may be an added incentive to rush things along.

A U.S. adoption agency representing the Hollywood star filed the

papers at Vietnam's International Adoption Agency, said Vu Duc

Long, the agency's director.

"Angelina Jolie just filed the papers this week," Long said.

"I am very happy to learn about this and hope they will receive permission from the [Vietnamese] authorities regarding the adoption. It proves that they love the country and the people of Vietnam."

Trung said the ministry would consider the application and, if approved, it would send it to the people's committee of Ho Chi Minh City.

"We will only start working on the adoption with their acceptance," he said.
